Dave Becker is an educator and museum professional who serves as a leader for NatureStart, the Chicago Zoological Society’s groundbreaking and comprehensive early childhood initiative. For the past 12 years, he and his team have consistently expanded the boundaries of early childhood environmental education within Brookfield Zoo, as well as within the national and international zoo and aquarium community. Dave first began working with children as a 16-year-old youth volunteer and has continued to work with children and families in informal settings throughout his career, including 15 years as a social worker and nearly 20 years in the museum profession. Dave, the Chicago Zoological Society, and his team are being recognized for their innovative work and ongoing leadership in developing and promoting play-based hands-on nature programming in zoos, aquariums, nature centers, and other informal learning organizations.
